Forecast Calls for Warm Weather
In the Pacific Northwest, mother nature does not allow us the luxury of slowly easing into the nice weather. It is common, within the same day, to go from a cool and rainy to a clear blue sky with temperatures above 80 degrees. This may seem normal, but it takes time for the body to acclimatize to the hot weather.
With temperatures rising, take caution on the job, especially during heat waves. Knowing how to work safely in hot weather prevents heat stroke and other potential dangers. Take the appropriate precautions, and be on the lookout for any symptoms.
Watch for these Symptoms
Profuse sweating
Dizziness
Fatigue
Nausea
Muscle and abdominal cramps
Agitation
Headache
Confusion
Rapid heatbeat
Rapid / shallow breathing
Pale skin
Excessive thirst
Water. Rest. Shade.
Heat stroke results from prolonged exposure to high temperatures (usually in combination with dehydration) which leads to failure of the body's temperature control system. Whether or not you feel thirsty, re-hydrate constantly and schedule breaks where you may cool down. Look for a spot in the shade or a place with adequate fans for ventilation and cooling. Take time to refresh while enjoying some water; staying hydrated is imperative to beating the heat.
