OPERATOR SAFETY IN WINTER

STAYING ON TOP OF THE WEATHER

KEEPING THE OPERATOR IN MIND

Snow, ice, and inclement weather may impact your workplace this winter. Re-acquaint yourself and your team with the safety measures available to operators so the winter season may pass without a hitch.

In a previous post, we discussed the importance of preparing your tires for winter, and now we would like to focus on ways to combat the mental and physical strain put onto operators during this time of year.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

When the weather brings chilling winds and icy cold, it is easy to focus on personal discomfort. This is a potential distraction for any operator. Check the weather forecasts and bring extra warm clothing. Adding extra layers including gloves, scarfs, jackets, and hats can keep your attention on the task at hand.

DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME

It is natural to want to perform a job as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, if the focus is just on getting the job done in order to return indoors, safety may become second priority. Avoid accidents and rework by focusing on the task at hand, slow down, and pay attention. Ultimately, no time is saved when a job is rushed.

STAY ALERT

The short gray days of winter cause tiredness, and an exhausted driver is more likely to cause an accident that could harm oneself or others. Get the proper amount of sleep, and stay alert while working to complete the job safely.

Even if the physical signs of winter can't be seen, this time of year takes a toll on forklift operators. Remember to stay safe and work efficiently by dressing for success, doing it right the first time, and staying alert. Don't let winter get the best of you!
